Stop Drinking Alcohol Week 40 – Habit Memories (Transcript)

So that’s 40 weeks off the alcohol and another 2 pounds lost this week. Everything’s headed in the right direction.

Habit Memory

I had the weirdest thing this week. Call it a habit memory. It was a really strong craving. These cravings pop up every so often; I know they’re going to pop up. There’s nothing really I can do about it. That’s the problem with a habit, they’re always waiting there to jump out when you least expect them. I don’t mean that to sound dramatic, it’s just the way the brain works. Your brain just wants to store everything as a habit, to make it as easy as possible [for you] to get through your own life.

The Spark

I got a call from a buddy of mine in Ireland that I haven’t spoken to in a few months. I have spoken to the guy before [since I left Ireland]; he used to be one of my drinking buddies. It was just the way the call happened.

It felt like two years had never happened. It felt like I had been transported back in time.

We both support the same Premier League team [UK soccer], and we’re doing fairly well at the moment [Arsenal that is], so we’ve some good stuff to talk about for a change.

I asked him “Where are you?”

He said “I’m in Paddy Quinn’s”, which one of my old local haunts.

And then he said “I’m going down to the Diamond”, which was another place that we used to go.

The Rush

And it just all flooded over me. It was like I was two miles up the road instead of two thousand miles. I could taste the Guinness, I could smell the bar, I knew who’d be in there and who wouldn’t be in there. It was just the weirdest, weirdest feeling. I haven’t had that in a long time.

It just came out of the blue, hit me very hard, and lasted a couple of seconds. I was thinking about it for a few days. It was a weird thing, just because of the overall strength. So many different factors came in at once to form this habit memory inside my head. As soon as the memory popped up, it nearly pushed me up out of the chair to do something automatically, if that makes any sense at all.

I’ll talk a bit more about this habit memory thing later in the week, I’ll try and flesh it out a little bit for you.
