What is the Foundation of All Success? | What is a Successful Life?

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 4 comments

Today, I want to do a quick video.

It’s a beautiful summer’s day and I’m on my walk back home.

I want to do a quick video on the foundation of all success.

You’d think that would be a really long video wouldn’t you?

But it’s not, because it all boils down to one principle, and that’s to lead the life that you want to lead.

That’s the foundation of all success.

I know it’s simple and it’s logical, it doesn’t need to be said.

If you were leading the life that you want to lead, then you’re successful, but it depends on what you think as success.

Warren Buffet said that

if all you think of is doubling the figures at the end of your balance sheet, and that’s what you aim at all the time, then your life is not going to be very successful or very happy, because that’s not what life is all about.

And it’s the same sentiment that is repeated all the time by people who have got great wealth, so I suppose they’re in a good position to say that, but also by people that haven’t got great wealth.

By people like the Dalai Lama.

I remember listening to one of his audio books, and he said

‘’if you view success as having material things, you will never have enough because you’ll always want more.’’

There is always more to have.

There’s a bigger house or a bigger boat, bigger car, bigger bank account, bigger schlong, if that’s what your thing is.

If that’s the way you view life, if that’s the way you view achievement or success, happiness, then you will never reach your goal, because somebody’s always got a bigger house than you, bigger car, bigger schlong.

What are you going to do, then?

So the only way to look for it is inside, that’s what he was saying.

That’s what a lot of people say, that happiness is an inside job.

It’s something that can only be found not by searching outside, but by searching on the inside.

Of course people on the outside add to your happiness.

My son adds greatly to my happiness, as does my partner, my family.

I’ve got great enjoyment from being with them.

Money helps you to be happy, no doubt about that, because it means that you can do some things in your life that you would otherwise be unable to do.

I think being poor sucks big time.

I think unless you say ‘well, yeah I don’t want any money, I’m going to seclude myself in the mountains of Tibet and pray all day’’, if you change your identity to that level, then being poor is not going to be a problem to you.

It depends on how you look at these things.

But if you want to see some good things in life, then money helps.

Seeing all the good things in life is pointless if you’re not leading the life that you want to lead.

For me, leading that life and getting to that stage where you’re leading the life that you want to lead means that there’s nothing else that you want to change about yourself.

As long as you’ve got changes that you want to make in your life to that core identity, that core person that you are, as long as you have changes that you need to make to that person, then you’re not leading the life that you want to live.

You’re selling yourself short.

So, it all boils down to short term pain for long term gain instead of short term gain for long term gain.

That’s the way I lived most of my life until I stopped drinking.

I still have a lot of work to do, there’s still some things that I want to change.

I’m hoping that I’ve got enough time left to make those changes.

But I’m heading in the right direction, which brings me immense satisfaction and enjoyment, and gives me pleasure.

I’m not yet leading the life that I want to lead.

I’ve not yet settled my identity as a person, I don’t even really know who that end person is going to be.

I have a good idea, but it changes all the time.

It’s a fluid process that’s going to change the more I get into this.

For me, the thing that was holding me to my old identity was one massive thing, the alcohol.

It’s a poison in more than one way.

It’s a poison not only physically, destroys your physical organs.

It also destroys your mind which destroys your thinking.

Your brain is the seat of our thinking, without your brain, you’re not thinking.

We see people all the time, look at poor Muhammad Ali who his body was destroyed by Parkinson’s disease, a disease that, who knows whether he contributed towards it himself, but for a lot of his life, he was like that.

Look at Stephen Hawking, brilliant mind who has come up with some of the deepest concepts about the universe and creation.

And yet the guy, for majority of his life has been confined to a wheelchair in a ruined body because of a disease.

I remember going around one of my best customers when I was in Ireland.

I used to get my car fixed with his son, and we used to do his hedges, he had this big tall leylandi hedges that we used to go around and do a couple of times a year.

His wife had dementia.

It was so sad because he’d tell me these stories about what they used to do when they were younger, and now sometimes she didn’t even know who he was.

He’d lived with her for 50 or 60 years, and one morning he’d come down and she didn’t know who the hell he was.

She was never scared or anything like that, she kind of had a notion that he was friendly, but she just forgot his name.

They don’t know whether it’s lifestyle, where we live, the things that we’ve done, I don’t know.

I’m saying that what you’ve got in your control is the choices that you make.

Like I said, it’s the biggest fundamental foundation of all success, it’s leading the life that you want to lead.

If you’re living the life that you want to live, regardless of what that means to you, if that means having a lot of money or a big yacht and dolly birds by your side, whatever your personal view of that it, you will know when it’s happening and you’ll know when it’s not happening.

You’ll know that there are changes that you need to make in your life.

If you don’t like the job that you’re doing, find a way to get out of it.

If you don’t like the place that you live, make the changes, you know?

I’ve done some of these things despite my drinking.

We moved over here because I just couldn’t stand living in Ireland anymore, not because I didn’t like the country, I love the country.

I left Ireland because I couldn’t stand the rain anymore.

Where we were living in Ireland, there was maybe 300 days of a year where we got some form of fucking rain, it was so depressing.

I couldn’t live with that anymore so I moved.

It took a while to plan it out, it took about 3 years before we could execute that, before we could move over here, and I had family over here so it made it a lot easier.

Before we moved over here, things financially collapsed so we had to start again, but we had enough so that we could basically live, and we lived very poorly for a while but it doesn’t cost a lot to live over here.

What I’m saying is that

if you want to get the life that you want to live, you have to put up with the discomfort and make those changes because if you don’t, it’s an awful shame to waste your life.

It’s your life at the end of the day, it’s nobody else’s.

You’re the only one that is going to suffer.

You and maybe your kids, your family.

So yeah, that’s it, for what it’s worth, a little inspiration.

Kevin, this one hit home with me. Thank you. I am sure that I want to be on a better path. I have retired early but am looking to find myself. I appear to have enough money, but you never know. The stock market could tank, one of us could become so sick that the bills would be overwhelming. I cannot really control those things. I am suddenly needing to find out what I want to do in life. I think it is important to make a difference, not just get up at noon, work out, read a book and go to bed; get up and do it all over again. Work always defined me. Now that I do not have it anymore, I do have the great option to reinvent myself and that is a gift although at the moment it seems like a giant pain in the ass. 🙂 (Bad attitude showing).

I will save this blog. It makes me think. Thanks again!

I enjoy hearing your personal stories Kevin. Makes the thing more real. I think of the yoga philosophy as something for me to study along with the quitting as the values are towards right living.
