What Happens To My Emotions When I Quit Drinking Alcohol?

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 1 comment

One of the most surprising things from me when quitting drinking alcohol, once I started out on the journey, was how screwed up, topsy-turvy, my emotions had become. The effects of alcohol drinking creep up on you over many years.

When you first drink alcohol, bang… you are hit between the eyes with the powerful reaction that happens when you put such an insidious toxin inside your body. Your body has several ways of trying to tell you how wrong this is. There’s dizziness, the room spinning around, nausea, vomiting, and the inevitable consequential hangover (the after-effects of alcohol poisoning).

What Happens To My Emotions When I Quit Drinking Alcohol?

Of course, all these effects diminish over the years as your body gets used to the continuous flow of alcohol. You become immune to the same dose, needing more all the time. But your body never becomes immune to the damage.

So we are all well aware of the physical damage that alcohol can cause. Fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney damage, wet brain, high blood pressure, stroke, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, cancer (breast, mouth, throat, oesophagus, liver, colon)… But what about the damage that is caused to your mind, to your feelings, to your emotions, to the way you see the world and the people in it…

We drink alcohol as a tool to heighten some emotions and to depress or eliminate others. It’s bad enough doing this once. But when you repeat the process, over and over again, the emotion and the tool become intertwined, difficult to separate, independent.

Emotional adjustment in the bottom of the bottle, down the syringe needle, or through a chemical pill, can never be found, not really. We are brainwashed into believing that it’s the alcohol that makes us happy. In reality, it’s your friends that make you happy. It’s the situation that you are in, the environment, the pub, the restaurant, the party… The music, the laughter, the jokes, the stories, the love we share with people… These are all things that bring happiness. But were told over and over again that it’s the alcohol. We are shown advertisements over and over again which depict happy people in happy situations drinking the happiness Elixir… So, happy emotions become linked to drinking alcohol.

On the opposite end of the scale, we have emotions which are not so happy. Sadness, shyness, regret, guilt, fear, and so on. We drink alcohol to suppress these emotions. To hide them away so nobody else can see them, so we can’t feel them. But these emotions are there for a reason. They are your mind or your body trying to tell you something. When you try to push these emotions down below the surface, they don’t go away, they build up. Whatever is causing these emotions never gets solved. I just become more complicated. We end up feeling the emotions themselves.

It’s tough when you stop in the beginning because you may have a barrage of these emotions flooding your system, overpowering your mind. It’s something you have to ‘deal with’. However, once you get to the reality of the your emotions, you will realize that your happiness is not dependent on a fucking toxin, in fact alcohol is a toxin to your happiness as well as your body. You will know that all those adverts showing young people laughing and having fun are a con, (young people are turning away from alcohol in their droves, by the way). You will see your emotions as something to treasure. Not something to hide away from, to muzzle and silence. Your emotions are something to embrace. They are an essential part of the communications between your mind and your body, between your body and your mind. And despite what most people will try to tell you, once you don’t have a toxin in the way, you are in control of your emotions. Mind over matter!

Kindest regards to you and yours. I hope you have a wonderful day.

I have just listened to your video. It has helped a lot. I have stopped drinking coming of slowly as i have been a heavy wine drinker for so many years i have lost count. The emotion i had this morning to a friends distress about losing a t-shirt was scary. I had no time for it. I got so angry i started shaking. In fact it scared me. Don’t get me wrong everything was ok. But it was good to hear that i am going to have to find a way to deal with these emotions that will be appearing that i have blocked out for so many years. Thank you.
