The Alcohol Monster – The Little Monster vs The Big Monster

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 1 comment

We’ve all heard about the alcohol monster. I want to talk about the big monster and the little monster.

Today, I want to talk about the difference between the two monsters we’ve got surrounding alcohol.

Metaphorically speaking, we have the big monster and the little monster.

Probably contrary to popular opinion, the little monster is actually the alcohol.

When you look at the alcohol, look at the bar, when you look at advertisements, look at what people are saying to you, these are all external things.

They are things trying to influence you to one degree or another.

But, they can’t really do anything unless you allow them to.

So, the big monster is your mind, your thoughts, your decisions, your choices, and it’s how you process all of this information once it gets in there.

When you look at alcohol, what is it?

It’s an inert, impotent liquid that sits in a bottle, that people somewhere have added stuff to, to make it taste nice, to make the label look nice, to make the bottle look nice, to make it fizzy, to make it nice to drink.

But apart from these enticements, if alcohol had any power at all, then you wouldn’t need these enticements.

You’d just drink it for the sake of drinking it.

It’s the same thing when we look at a bar.

A bar is a building with chairs in it, it’s set up in a certain way to get you in, and once you’re in there, to keep you in, keep you drinking.

Advertisements are just pictures on a billboard, moving pictures on a screen, people talking and jabbering away trying to convince you to do what they’re asking you to do, to drink their product.

They’re nothing in the grand scheme of things.

If you don’t act on these things, there is no drinking alcohol.

They’re useless and impotent if you don’t act on them.

You have to get it into your head that the biggest monster is your own brain if you let it.

This is something you’ve got complete control over.

You don’t have to allow this happen.

You don’t have to allow your mind to wander down this route.

It’s all bullshit, it’s playing with your head.

For the sake of selling an addictive liquid.

With all the little monsters, you can avoid.

You can avoid going into a bar, you can walk straight by a pub door and not go in there.

That’s what anyone who doesn’t drink alcohol does all the time.

You can not drink the alcohol.

You can ignore the advertisements.

If you don’t drink, none of these things matter.

They don’t excite anything inside your mind.

So what’s the solution to the big monster in your head?

How do you stop this thing from getting a grip on you?

First thing is determination.

It’s to have the physical, mental determination in the beginning, that no matter what you understand what’s happening, and this stuff is only affecting you in this specific way and not affecting anyone else.

There are plenty of people that are not bothered in the slightest by alcohol advertisements.

There are many people who can quite gladly walk by a fridge full of alcohol without batting an eyelid.

It depends on how you portray these things in your own mind.

If you give a shit about alcohol, if you allow it get into your head and mess around with your brain…these adverts are designed to keep you drinking alcohol, then you’re your own worst enemy.

You have to say fuck alcohol from the beginning.

You have to say ‘fuck my old life. That’s it. From this moment forward, I’m not drinking alcohol no matter how many sleepless nights I go through, no matter the cravings. I’m not going to drink alcohol again’.

That’s determination.

Where you find that is another story.

We all have it in us to do those kinds of things.

If you want something bad enough, you’ll find a way to do it.

Affirmations is a great one for trying to get your head around these things.

It’s positive sentences that you make up which counteract the negativity.

If for instance you’re feeling the alcohol is calling to you, or the pub is calling to you or whatever, and you find those voices inside your head trying to convince yo to go into the pub, then you’ve got a stock of your own personal, positive statements which are driving you in the opposite direction and pulling you forward.

One of mine was ‘Fuck alcohol, it’s not doing anything good in my life and I’m glad I’m leaving it behind’ or ‘alcohol inside me is dying, and I’m glad it’s dying. I don’t mourn the death of an enemy’.

There’s plenty of those It’s all personal.

Repeat these things in your head at the same time as the other ones are coming up.

You repeat these to quash these feelings.

For instance, when I’m trying to go to sleep at night, sometimes…have you ever had these thoughts running around your head and you just can’t get rid of them.

My trick was to sing a song in my head.

It might sound stupid, but it worked for me.

I might play a little Beethoven in my head.

Once you’re doing that, it dampens down all the rest of it, and stops your mind from thinking the thoughts you don’t want.

You can’t think two things at once.

Going through a tune in your head is a good way of getting rid of those thoughts.

Affirmations is exactly the same principle.

You cannot think a negative thought and a positive thought at the same time.

That’s all affirmations are.

Don’t be sucked in by any of the other stuff.

You’re basically just using your own mind for your own advantage as much as you can.

The alcohol monster is all fictitious.

It’s made up by us, it’s all in the head where you have the most control.

Outside of yourself, you can’t deal with it.

You have less control.

Inside, you have more control, and this is where all the cravings and thoughts and discomfort happen.

Use your control.

Hi Kevin, if the word alcohol and monster were interchangeable. I had taken the view that, big alcohol was the drinks industry and small alcohol as the poison itself.

After watching your video I can see there only ever was small alcohol, a mix of the industry and the addictive poison they sell.

The only thing added big to it was my thoughts. Its a clear obnoxious poisonousness
load of waste you time/life in bottle.

Checking my diary shows I’m on day 87 booze free.
I’m 32″ waist trousers was 38″ I look 10 years younger. Fuck off with that piss is my mantra. A bit blunt, But this drug and thats what it is, left me in hospital with a blood clot and my mother and farther being told I had only minutes to live, my two young kids almost with no father and I still drank the stuff for another 5 years. Why I did this I don’t know, maybe because I didn’t see this liquid drug for what it is.

Another great video, I am most grateful for the help and support Ive had from you.
You have a great ability, a true talent, to take things that can look complicated and simplify, a way of cutting to the chase. I can be my own worst enemy and ruminate.
By ruminate I mean play the same old unhelpful thoughts over and over in my head adding the complications as they go, spiraling down as they go.

From now on I will endeavor to become a train spotter. Spotting my trains of thought and making sure I don’t put the big into alcohol. its a liquid drug plain and simple. There never was anything big about it without my thoughts.
