Stop Drinking Alcohol Week 22

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol, Year One | 6 comments

Hi friends,

Sorry there’s no video this week. My Dad is very poorly in hospital and I just haven’t had any time to devote to the site.

I’m still off the booze although I must admit I was very tempted when I got the news. I didn’t succumb and I won’t. This means too much to me now. My Dad has told me several times how proud he is of what I’m doing, it really means a lot. So, I’m keeping my head level and focusing my thoughts as much as possible.

There’s not much to say this week so here’s an inspiring poem by Rudyard Kipling which was written as paternal advice for his son John Kipling….

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Rudyard Kipling

Until next week…
Onwards and upwards!

    Sorry to hear about your dad. However great that you didn’t give in. You videos have been a great inspiration for me and I’ve decided to give up. Seriously, almost all the worst decisions I’ve made in my life have been ties to grog.

    Kevin,

    So sorry about your dad. I’ve been through it and can relate to how you must be feeling. So proud to hear you remained strong. It’s the tough times that test our real strength. Keep up the great work and thanks for continuing to help others.

    Hugs!

    Today I leaned that after 8 interviews and 4 months I didn’t get the job of my dreams. Well maybe not that good but damn good. They called and said the job has been canned. Nice. What waste of time. All my mates called offering beers. Thankfully I didn’t. Close call. Stay strong guys.
