This is Alcohol Mastery, my name’s Kevin O’Hara, and welcome to the Thursday Tally number 15….

Major Brain Fart

My tip of the week this week is how to stay focused on everything that’s going on around you,
When you’ve got all this turmoil, especially inside and especially in the first few days of giving up the drink…

But for now I just wanted to talk a little bit about the site…

The site was down this week for four or five days, I hope it didn’t inconvenience people too much…

It was my own fault; I got a great deal on hosting….

I was transferring all the files and databases across, and it just took me a hell of a long time
To get everything back together and working…

So my apologies to anyone who’s visited the site and seen nothing there….

Ups and Downs

So that brings me to the ups and downs for the week….and definitely on the top of the down list has got to be having my site down….

On top of the up list is losing another couple of pound… I’m basically over half way towards my goal weight now….

And I really feel good… I mean I’m feeling better and better as I go along…

It’s becoming easier to do things, I don’t think about alcohol as much…

I mean I still do think about it, it’s very difficult to do something for so long and not to think about it after only three or four months… But it is getting there!

How To Stay Focused

So my tip of the week this week is really to stay focused in the here and now, in the moment…

And that’s because it’s the only place where you can change anything, it’s the only place where all the action happens….

Now, I’m not saying don’t plan… you need to plan for the future…

You need to figure out in your own head exactly what you’re going to do in the social situations and the different situations that you’re going to be in, in your own life…where drink is going to be involved… you need to do that…

But the problem is that a lot of people focus on the future too much…

They focus on the ‘what if’s’ of the future… you know… ‘what if this happens’ or ‘what if that happens’ and basically that just stops them from doing anything…

How-to-Stay-Focused

The Infinite “What If

To me ‘what if’s’ are like… I’m a big fan of science fiction, and I like reading about parallel or alternative universes….

A parallel universe for me is where somebody makes a decision… say you make a decision, you’ve got two choices and one decision you go down one avenue and the other avenue splits of into a parallel universe….

So if you think about it in terms of that, you’ve got every decision that you make and every decision that someone else makes and there’s just an infinite number of parallel universes going on…

It’s the same as the ‘what if’s’, I mean how many ‘what ifs’… ‘what if this happens’ or ‘what if that happens’ and ‘if that happens what if that happens’ and ‘if those things happen, oh my God, what if that happens and this happens’ …

And people just go…. and they hit a brick wall and they say “I can’t do it, it’s too hard”… and it is… it becomes too difficult for somebody to do those things…

Good Things Come in Small Packages

We have to keep thinking about what’s happening now, you have to bring things back to just this present moment…

To the present moment when things are happening around you… bring it into context…

You have to ask yourself… “What do I do about what’s happening now, outside me….

Remember, now is the only place where you can actually deal with anything…

And bringing things back to the present… you’re going to be making an action or a reaction depending on what’s going on inside yourself…

So you have to stop and ask yourself…

  • What are you feeling?
  • What are you saying to yourself?
  • What are the voices inside your head saying to you?
  • What pictures are you seeing?
  • How do you view this in the context?

And it’s only when you actually get down to this context level, when you reduce everything down to these little packages of time, that you can actually deal with it….

And you can deal with them as separate little things…

Instead of trying to see into the future and guess what’s going to happen, you just take everything [the situation you’re in at the moment], deal with it as one little package, and move on…

We’re All In The Same Boat

And please remember that we’re all on the same journey here, we’re all in the same boat…

We might deal with things differently, we might have different physical symptoms or psychological symptoms, but essentially we’re all trying to beat alcohol…

And if you take it in small little steps like that, in small little packages, and deal with those as they come up, you’ll find it’s a whole lot easier than trying to deal with the whole alcohol monster on it’s own…

I mean if you think to yourself… “Alcohol, I’m never going to have a drink again!

You know, it’s a hell of a long time… forever, and it’s a big and daunting task… it’s too huge for anyone to take on….

I do think to myself that I’m never going to drink again, but I don’t look at it in those terms…I just look at it from day to day to day…

I’m not having a drink today, and I’ve no intentions of having one tomorrow, onwards and onwards and onwards like that…

And it’s the only way to take it….

So I really hope you got something out of this … that was the Thursday Tally number 15….

Subscribe the channel here on YouTube…and you can keep up with all the videos…

And please go over to the website because I can do maybe 3 or 4 videos a week but they just take a long time to do… and it’s really all the time that I have…

But I do try and put a post up every day, something even if it’s only a couple of hundred words…
And there’s links to twitter and Facebook, so you can see all those over there…

So this was the Thursday Tally number 15, I’m Kevin O’Hara, this is alcoholmastery.com….

Onwards and Upwards!
