Giving up Trying to Give up Alcohol and Just Making Do

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 4 comments

Today’s video is about a comment I got, “What about when you want to just give up trying and just try (the big word here) to make do with it? Helpful hints to get back up and try, try again??”

How’re you doing? I’m Kevin O’Hara for alcoholmastery.com.

Today, I want to talk about a comment that I got.

This guy said ‘did you ever think about giving up trying to give up and just making do?’

First thing I’ll say is that half the problem of trying to quit in the first place, and most of the problem with people who go through their lives drinking alcohol is not understanding the problem.

It’s the first level of learning.

Unconscious incompetence.

It basically means that you don’t know what you should be changing, what you should know.

You don’t know anything.

You’re incompetent but you’re unconsciously incompetent.

It’s the first stage of Prochaska’s habit change formula.

That’s pre-contemplation.

The person doesn’t know that they have a problem.

You know you have a problem.

You know alcohol isn’t doing you any good.

You know it’s a forceful evil.

It’s the Darkseid, and that’s not beneficial to you.

So, it’s very difficult to go back on that, to give up giving up.

It’s like you know that you have a problem that needs to be changed, so you’re always going to have that in the back of your mind.

You can’t enjoy doing what you used to do because you know what you’re doing is wrong.

The second part of this is where you say ‘making do’.

Making do assumes that everything is going to stay the same as it is now.

If you continue to drink, that situation you’ve put yourself in is going to get worse.

The alcohol problem is going to get worse.

This is a drug, and like any drug, there are tolerance levels.

The more you drink, the more you need, the more the consequences.

The hangover will get worse.

The situation is not going to stay the same, so that making do part of it is not going to happen.

You’re talking about a downward spiral as Allen Carr puts it.

One of the best ways I know of getting out of this is to look at your future from different perspectives.

It’s like the Dickens’ trip.

You take yourself a few years down the line and start to look at your life from the perspectives of you drinking, or you not drinking.

What will happen if you carry on drinking, and if you stop drinking?

You’ll find that by doing these things, it gives you an insight into yourself.

You know you won’t just be making do.

I hope that helps.

Don’t give up trying to give up.

If you do do this, you’re not going to make do.

Look at your life from that perspective.

Take a trip down your own future, so to speak, and have a look at things from 5 years down the road.

See which one you prefer.

All it takes is getting over that instant gratification buzz.

You need to put up with the discomfort now.

No matter the cravings are, they’re not going to last.

No matter what symptoms and side effects you get from not poisoning your body anymore, it’s going to pass.

If you keep drinking, it will never pass.

Your life is going to get shittier.

I’ll leave it there.

When ever I did do treatment programs, I did just fine. Good things happened like going to community college, learning new skills through good jobs and building relationships. Only problem was, that in order to get to that point, I first had to be in trouble with the law
This time around I don’t want to wait till something bad happens. I know for a fact that I must find a way to acquaint myself with the right people and do something to stay in a healthy environment. I have a tendency of thinking I will always live single and not have others to look after. This is erroneous thinking cause I still have my senior parents and my community.

I really want to quit and I have weanded myself down to one beer. Im afraid of having seizures from withdraw. If I go to a doctor it will be on my Medical record and I could loss my job. They frown on this. So going to a doctor is not an option. I know I have to try but I live alone so Im afraid.
