Finally Showing Real Emotions Without Drowning Them Out With Alcohol

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 3 comments

It’s something you don’t give too much thought to before you quit, but your emotions are a part of you which can be wiped out with long term alcohol use. Think about it for a minute. As drinkers, what is the first thing we think about when we get emotional? Whether it’s commiserating with ourselves or celebrating with ourselves, alcohol is on the top of the list. And each and every time we turn to alcohol to commend or condole, we kill a bit more of our natural capacity to feel, to really feel our emotions.

When we self-medicate with alcohol, as we all do, we are not allowing ourselves to be truly alive. We become numb to the world. If we feel fear, frustration, fury, or we’re in a funk…we drown out the feelings with a few glasses of alcohol…Kill these emotions stone-dead! We don’t want them, we don’t need them, we don’t value them, we only want to get rid of them. Trouble is – we do need these emotions and we should value them. They are valuable to us as thinking and feeling human beings. Without these emotions we are not complete. All beneficial change comes from experiencing our emotion. There is meaning in misery, value in anger, and profit in fear. They are there for a reason – mostly as a push to change direction, to do something different, to reassess.

Savour all your emotions. They are proof that you are fully alive.

For me, the most luxurious place is somewhere that allows you to feel emotions and pleasures. Alain Ducasse

Hey Tony, don’t worry about putting in lots of miles. Start slowly, go at your own pace, just walk around the block…if you feel like you can do more, do it. If that’s too much, just walk up and down your street. I suggest you read a book called “Whole” by T. Colin Campbell. I had a lot of pain in the joints and stomach problems until I changed what I was putting in my mouth…it’s all connected. Congrats on the 34 days 🙂

    Tony,
Just put on some comfortable shoes and walk out your door and walk as far as you can and back, even if it’s just a few feet. Go a little bit further everyday……soon you’ll be walking miles.
