Can Events Actually Become More Enjoyable Without Alcohol?

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 3 comments

The secret to happiness is freedom. The secret to freedom is courage.

From my own experience, I love events.

It doesn’t happen straight away because you’ve got a bit mix of discomfort and anxiety to contend with. Drinking long term habit.

One of the things that struck me about the advice to take things day by day was a kind of fear that everything reduced to the single day. .

You do have to take things day by day anyway, in fact you take things moment by moment.

When you think about it, that’s all you’ve got.

But these moments are not static.

You’re not stuck in the same place.

They are dynamic.

The further you move away from alcohol, the easier they get, the moments and the days, the thoughts about alcohol….

I amable to attend some parties without feeling like I’m depriving myself and have fun (even though I’m not drinking at all).

It’s always been the fun factor that held me back from going completely n/a.

In other cases I’m simply not having as much fun as I would’ve if I’d had a couple of glasses of wine.

And what about…

moderation experiments???

I’ve gone through too many in my life.

I know I was kidding myself.

I always went back to the where I was before.

All moderation ever did for me was keep me trapped.

I was trapped in the lies and the self-deception that I couldn’t live without my alcohol.

It’s a gullibility trap.

The fun is in the people you are with.

It’s in the environment.

It’s in the laughter, the stories, the jokes, the letting down of the guard.

That doesn’t disappear just because you don’t drink any more.

It’s all still there, you are still you.

I used to drink most of the time because I was bored.

Of course I had fun with drink.

But I have fun without drink.

There’s a time when all drinkers turn into clowns – Think about the drunken clown from the John Candy movie “Uncle Buck”.

I don’t have to listen to the clowns any more.

I don’t have to listen drunks any more.

The real fun of drinking is in the drunkenness.

It’s not in the people, the place, the time.

It’s in the drunkenness, or whatever you want to call it, high, buzz, fun!

Is there a period of time when events actually DO become more enjoyable without alcohol?

The true answer is only if you want them to.

If you fix your mind as a you being a person who doesn’t need to use alcohol.

If you connect fun with alcohol then it’s hard to go against your perceptions.

We can only truly speak from our own perspectives, I’ve never had so much fun as I’m having right now.

Although I didn’t know it at the time, alcohol was killing me in more ways than one.

My personality was dying every day I drank, drowning in a singular focused toxic fog.

I was becoming the person who only lived to drink.

I had already become that person at night – and the alcohol part of my mind was trying to trap the day as well.

We’re going away at the weekend for a few days, I can’t wait. No alcohol, just pure fun.

For one thing, I’ll remember it, so I can relive the fun whenever I want.

I can’t ever say that about any of the fun I had while drinking.

Happiness is an inside job

Until next time…
Onwards and Upwards!

You are right about having more fun and enjoying things.

I have signed up for a bunch of personal development classes to fill up my week with new things. I never had enough self esteem to do it before. Thanks, Kevin!

In social situations what has been working for me is to bring my own non-alcoholic beer, sparkling water, or sparkling apple juice (which looks just like champagne), so as to have something in my hand while mingling with the other party goers. I think that a big part of drinking alcohol in social settings is to just have something do while making small talk. It allows you to exit a conversation to get a drink, offer someone a drink to initiate a conversation and clink glasses in a partying kind of way. I essentially blend in, make the rounds and be my witty self without slurring my words, throwing up in the bathroom, passing out and waking up the next day severely hungover. I had a wonderful time and I am not paying for it the next day. A win win in my book.
