Birthday Parties Without Booze – What Am I Going To Do?

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 11 comments

Today I want to talk about birthday parties.

How do you go to birthday parties without having a drink?

I went to a birthday party the other day.

It was my sister’s 3-year-old’s party, and it had nothing to do with alcohol but it’s exactly the same principles.

Nothing to do with a 3-year-old’s party, the alcohol.

There were a couple of cans of beers going around, that kind of thing, but that had nothing to do with me, I’m well over that.

For me, it was 3-year-old birthday party food which was crisps and pizza and sweets and cakes and all that kind of stuff.

I’m trying my best not to eat that kind of stuff anymore, and I’m on a juice diet.

I have been on a juice diet for the last ten days and I’m trying to keep off solid food.

I did the same thing last year and I felt great after I finished it.

Basically, it’s just juicing down.

I drink half a litre of pure fruit and vegetable juice that I’ve done myself.

I got a machine last year, I paid £160 for it from Germany; I just put the fruits and vegetables into it and it just mulches it up and takes out all the fibre, and all you’re left with is the juice.

Last year I did full juicing, so it was 6 of this half litre juice a day…that’s about 3 litres a day of this juice.

Like I said, I felt great afterwards, I mean you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals and nutrients that you need, all the protein.

It was meant for weight loss, and I did lose weight.

I lost 20 pounds in a month.

You gain about 6 pounds back when you start eating again because your digestive system is filling back up with food.

One of the best losses is the one you make in the first few days of this juice diet because you’re just evacuating all the food that you’ve gone through over the past few months or whatever it is.

Anyway, I’ve also got a blender, so this year, I’ve been mixing between the two.

So, I’m having one and a half litre of blended fruits and vegetables, so I’m still getting all the fibre, and then one and a half litre of the fresh juice.

So, I arrived at this birthday party.

I’m fully satisfied with the half a litre of juice I drank, I was fully satisfied.

But then, on that day, I made sure I drank the juice just before I went.

We sat there in front of the table, my sister and me and my brother-in-law.

They said ‘’what do you want to drink’’, then I go ‘’I’ll have orange juice’’, so he comes out with this really nice orange juice, and then they came out and put crisps down.

And hey, I like a crisp, it’s like a potato chip in America, and there are some lovely ones over here, just plain, salt and oil, and that’s it; really nice, and my sister makes lovely cakes.

And I said I wasn’t going to eat it, and so I didn’t…for about twenty minutes.

Then I said ‘’I’ll just have one crisp…and then one crisp turned into another crisp, and before I knew it, I was eating sandwiches and I had a bit of pizza.

I’m a vegan, I don’t eat that stuff anymore, but I just…I fell drastically.

I enjoyed the taste, it wasn’t that I didn’t.

I’m not beating myself up over it, it’s one of those things that happens, you know?

So, I’m back on the juice diet today…

onwards and upwards.

ALWAYS PLAN AHEAD

The whole thing that I didn’t do yesterday was that I didn’t think ahead.

What I thought was ‘’what I’m going to do is, I’m going to ask for orange juice and that should do me’’, and it just wasn’t going to work.

So,

when you’re in these situations, the best thing to do is to plan ahead;

know exactly what you’re going to do.

And generally, you know what’s going to happen in certain situations.

If you’ve been to these types of things before, you know what you’re going to do, and you know what’s going to be on offer.

You can run through all those things before you go and just plan it out and just say ‘’when this happens, I’m going to do this’’.

For instance, yesterday, I should have said ‘’Well look, I’m going to a birthday party, it’s going to be fun and I’m going to just sit there and not eat’’, and I should’ve brought some stuff to eat.

I should’ve said ‘‘I am eating fruits and vegetables after all, and this is the thing that I’m eating’’.

So, I should’ve brought some bananas, apples and stuff like that with me.

I could’ve even had some bread, and had some salad and stuff with it, and tomatoes.

I don’t mind any of that stuff, I like all that stuff…but I didn’t do that.

There’s a lesson in there, a lesson for me, just to plan ahead for next time and say ‘’next time, I’ll do this’’.

You sort of have to think to yourself ‘’I’m going to have to plan in future, I can’t just make these decisions without planning. I can’t go to these events while I’m under restrictions and just hope for the best’’.

I didn’t even remember that this birthday party was coming up.

My sister has four kids and they’re really evenly spaced, so one every three months, there’s a birthday.

I should’ve known the birthday was coming up, I mean, I knew last week, I just didn’t prepare.

Preparation is the key to everything if you want to succeed at anything.

It takes you outside of what you’re normally going to do and you’ve got to prepare your mind, your mind will then prepare your body.

Preparation is the key.

There are a few things I could’ve done, like I said: brought my own food, asked Matteo ‘’what have you got in the fridge?’’.

I could’ve gone and raided his fridge.

It’s the same thing with alcohol, you ask for something else.

If you’re offered something, you say ‘’well, no, I can’t drink that. I’ll drink something else, what else have you got?’’

Go prepared.

That’s the thing, anyway.

It’s a silly video, but just a personal lesson I thought I’d share with everyone.

I hope somebody gets something out of it.

If you have any questions or suggestions about going to these events yourself, then I’d love to hear what you have to say.

Have a great day, keep the drink out of your mouth!

IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU PLAN TO FAIL.

I think people want to feel apart of the celebration. I would bring something like bean tortilla chips with hummus and sliced fruit with a peanut butter spiced dip so I feel apart party

It’s true, Cheryl. Not feeling a part of the celebration is all in the head, it’s how you frame it in your own mind. That’s the mistake I made, not bringing anything for myself to eat. I felt a part of the party though.

    what a change……

not much related to alcohol mastery, just a lot about Kev and his eating.

Oh well, A change I suppose, but a bit of a letdown compared to the previous videos.

It’s all about the journey, Frank, all about the journey.

Hi Kevin, I don’t think this is a silly video at all. Its message is actually quite profound – be prepared. That applies to so much in life. we know that those who fail to plan, plan to fail. And while it might seem to be ‘only’ about your eating, it is very relevant to those quitting alcohol. Good nutrition is crucial when giving up the booze and so avoiding situations where one finds oneself without appropriate food and drink is terribly important to this journey and its success. Thank you for a great job.

I always bring a large bottle of seltzer water and pomegranate juice to mix. It’s a hit with the health-conscious adults!

Great advice. It is not only about alcohol that is put in our bodies, but all the other crap too. I am on day 2 of a cleanse. Lots of veggies, fresh fruit, no dairy, no meat. I am drinking lemon water in the morning. Today I shop for Apple cider vinegar, apples, artichokes, turmeric and lots of kale and spinach. I am keeping Ezekial bread and my Irish tea for now. Thank you Kevin. I learn something from every video. Gratefully, Margaret

Our literature in the 12 Step program of which I am a member suggests bringing another person in recovery with you if possible, go with your own transportation so you can leave if you’re getting uncomfortable & arriving late & leaving early (just the opposite of the suggestions for your 12 Step meeting which is to arrive early & leave late). 🙂
These suggestions have worked well for me over the years …so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it !
