Alcohol and Infectious Diseases(Transcript)
I’m Kevin O’Hara for Alcohol Mastery and today I’m going to be talking about Alcohol and Infectious Diseases.
Now heavy drinkers are more prone to getting infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, sexually transmitted diseases because their whole immune system is a lot weaker in general, there has been loads of tests that have been carried out to see if the immune system can be weakened by alcohol, the only problem is that a lot of these tests have been carried out on chronic alcoholics, really bad alcoholics.
The Test Results
There’s a famous test that was conducted in the Indiana University in 1995 which tested this to see if alcohol could affect the human immune system there was over a thousand students that were surveyed for the study. I’ll leave a link below to the actual results so you can have a look yourself.
The students were basically asked about their drinking habits and how it was affecting their overall health and the study found that, I’ll read you some of this, it said, students drinking 28 or more alcoholic drinks per week had significantly more health problems in aggregate and those drinking more than 22 drinks per week had more upper respiratory infections compared to other students including non-drinkers.
It was concluded that excessive alcohol intake increased the risk of respiratory infections and acute illnesses in this sample of students. I think it can be highlighted that most of the problems and infectious diseases that are caused from drinking alcohol are more behavioral. People getting drunk and mixing around where they shouldn’t be mixing around especially when it comes to the sexually transmitted diseases.
Anyway that is just another area where alcohol can cause problems, can cause health problems, its alcohol and infectious diseases.
So until next time, I’m Kevin O’Hara for Alcohol Mastery,

Thanks, helpful info. about the respiratory problems.
Thanks Kevin for this video. So true, my father was a very heavy drinker which lead him to having a massive stroke at the age of 43 paralyzing his entire right side and blinding his right eye. It was soon discovered he had tuberculosis also because of a compromised immune system. He lived another 19 years in a care facility eventually dying of the disease. Very sad when you think that it could have all been prevented if not for the drink.
That’s a very sad story, Rosie. Unfortunately, it’s one that has been repeated and will be repeated over and over.
Thanks for Sharing!
