Alcoholic Coma – Symptoms, Treatment, and Outlook

by | Health | 1 comment

Are you aware of the links between alcohol and coma?

A person will be defined as being comatose if they have been unconscious for more than 6 hours, they will not respond naturally to bright lights, sounds, or painful stimulation, and the brain function is at its base level of awareness.

Alcohol coma is a state of unconsciousness that results from sufficiently high amounts alcohol in the blood. The name is used by toxicologists to discriminate between alcohol and other toxins.

A related term is “acute alcohol poisoning”.

Coma from alcohol consumption can be induced in several ways:

  • High levels of alcohol may be enough to trigger coma
  • Severe vitamin deficiencies
  • Fall causing serious head injury

It can be life threatening to assume that someone who has drank too much can just sleep it off. If you suspect someone has alcohol poisoning, get medical help immediately.

What are the Symptoms of Alcohol Coma?

Some of the symptoms of alcohol coma include:

  • Closed eyes
  • No response to light shone in the eyes
  • No responses of limbs, except for reflex movements
  • No response to painful stimuli, except for reflex movements
  • Irregular breathing

Treatment for Alcohol Coma

Treatment for alcohol coma starts with stabilizing the patient, checking airways, and maintaining circulation and breathing. Medication and therapies will then be used to try get the person to regain consciousness. Many coma patients regain consciousness and go on to lead a full and trouble free life. Some are not that lucky.

Outlook

A coma will very rarely last more that 2 weeks to a month. The outlook for the patient on coming out of the coma will depend on any damage that has been caused. Some patients will need therapy for the rest of their lives, while others may recover fully.
