Things Change, Times Change, Feelings Change, Patience and Persistence

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 3 comments

Today, I want to talk about the way things change.

Things change, you change, times change, your environment changes, you change physically and mentally.

The sort of discomfort you’re going through now is not going to be anywhere near the same as the one you go through in two or three months’ time.

If you want to get rid of any bad habit in your life, and today I’m talking about alcohol.

If you want to get rid of alcohol, no matter how much you drink now, if you persist in not putting it into your mouth daily, you will gradually find that the cravings get easier to deal with.

The old parts of your life that you used to fill with alcohol will get a lot easier to deal with and your life in general will get easier.

I’m sat today at the top of a hill outside Guatemala.

This is a trench that was dug out during the Spanish civil war, and people were trying to kill each other, and here I am today walking along these hills.

Times have changed.

It’s a different time now.

Shit that happened in the past is not happening anymore.

Things are a lot better from that perspective.

What I’m saying is that like this thing was used to hide behind and fire shots at people and take cover from their shots, so I’m using it to make a video about self-improvement and behaviour change.

I’m saying from your perspective, the paths I walk along here are not going to be the same paths in 10 years’ time.

Maybe new paths will be trudged now.

You never know what’s going to happen.

It’s the same in your life, with the old stuff you do and the act that you like drinking now and the fact you’re doing it.

All of this will change.

You just have to give it time.

Time is a great healer.

The more time you put into this and the more effort you put into seeking out better things to do in your life, the less you will see this as being good times.

The less you will feel that you’re missing out on something.

One of the big problems people face when they quit drinking is they don’t find anything different to do.

They don’t replace the old with the new.

They get rid of the old habit, but they still have the old mentality because they don’t change those basic things in their lives, going to the pub.

You can’t find enjoyment going to the pub if you don’t drink.

Once in a blue moon, it’s great.

I go to the pub once in a blue moon and I have a bit of fun.

The last time I went to a pub was to go watch my sister singing.

But there is an alternative purpose there outside the drinking, so that’s the only reason I go to a pub now.

I used to go just to drink.

All those parts of our lives that we’re focusing on the alcohol once you take alcohol out of the situation, you have to find an alternative. Let’s say that, take this as a jigsaw puzzle.

You take a piece out of a jigsaw puzzle, if you try and put something back into that to fill that spot, then you’re basically trying to build the same picture.

That’s not the purpose here, the purpose is to change the picture.

To change the underlying picture. So your life looks different.

You don’t want to drink because alcohol is not part of that picture anymore.

Eating bad food is not part of that picture.

Sitting on your arse and not getting exercise is not part of that picture.

You have to change the underlying picture.

If you try and force new jigsaw pieces into a spot it doesn’t fit, then it’s going to look like a piece of shit, and that’s what your life will look like if you try and replace alcohol with a like substance.

Your life won’t look good.

You’ve got to change the whole thing.

Change happens bit by bit, step by step.

Don’t take on too much at once.

Get rid of the alcohol.

Look for alternatives to fill in the gaps, for other things you can do with your life.

Try different things because I didn’t know where I was going at the beginning.

No one does.

If you have a plan and you know where you’re going to go, then getting rid of alcohol out of your life is just a part of that process.

Fair enough, that’s good for you, you’re succeeding.

But if you don’t have a plan, you have to manufacture one.

You have to see the place you want to be in your life and see what it will take to get there.

For instance, in my own life, I really want to move into the countryside.

We live in a row of houses with other people around and the idea is to have our own place in the countryside within 5 years, and to have a bit of land around, for a piece of privacy.

Five years from now when we get that, maybe it will be shorter or longer, but things are going to be different.

I’ll be 5 years older for a start, halfway through my fifties.

The car I’m driving is now 7 years old.

In 10 years, that will be on a scrap heap.

My father passed away recently.

It’s hard for me to even accept that, he’s only just gone.

It’s hard to see that out of my life.

I remember when my granddad went.

It’s hard to imagine him being alive now.

I remember him being alive but it’s just such a long time ago. We’ve all got to change.

Things are going to change.

The best thing to do is sit down and look at the future and where you want to be in life, and figure how you’re going to get there.

Use everything you can in your power, visualizations, affirmations, whatever it takes to get yourself in that position.

It’s a step by step process.

The more positive you can be daily, the better it is for yourself.

That’s it.

If you have any questions at all, leave them down below.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

Can you see yourself in that position?

Because that’s where it all starts.

You visualize yourself in that position and know that even though it will take a long time, might take tough times, that you will eventually get there.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Very good. I find myself being impatient and want my mind to return to “normal”, instead I should be looking forward and focusing on my mind becoming “new and improved “
