Giving Up Alcohol – Know Your Enemy | What Are You Fighting? SDA24

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol, Year One | 0 comments

Welcome to stop drinking alcohol week 24.

My Dad is out of the hospital today which is great news for my family. It was touch and go for a while and we really didn’t expect him to pull through. He’s got a chance to start living healthy, including quitting the booze. He has been taking notice of what I’ve been doing and I think he’s ready… better late than never.

Know your enemy

You need to become very aware and educated about your enemy. Your real enemy is not alcohol, it’s you! Alcohol is an inert substance. It can’t do you any harm from inside the bottle. A person must physically lift the bottle and pour the contents into his mouth before it can do any damage…

Interrogate Yourself

The part of you that you need to understand is the part that’s weak for drink. You need to get to understand how it ticks. Understand the nature of the beast.

Among the questions you should be asking are:

When do you get the urge to drink?

What happens?

What do you think?

What do you feel?

What do you see inside your head?

What do you hear inside your head?

What is it that keeps you in the pub?

Why do you go to a particular pub?

This is by no means an exhaustive list. There’s gonna be a whole load of questions that you can ask yourself that are only relevant to you.

Stop Drinking Alcohol Week 24 – Know Your Enemy!

The Art Of War

Know your enemy is a quote from The Art of War, an ancient and highly influential book on military strategy. The relevant passage is:

“It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperilled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperilled in every single battle.”

My Enemy

I thought a lot about this before I stopped drinking alcohol. I discovered that I always drank to get pissed. I know it sounds obvious, but I never really thought about it like that before. I didn’t drink for the taste of the alcohol. How many times had I said “Ooh, this is a good pint of Guinness”, only to knock it back in a few swigs. It would barely touch the sides of my mouth. The objective was never to savour the taste, it was to get the alcohol into my bloodstream as quickly as I could. Alcohol taste is something that’s really hyped up by the manufacturers. Many marketing campaigns are made to convince you of the superior taste.

The reason you need to get to know your enemy is so you can kill that part of you in the most efficient way possible. It’s one of the simplest things that you can do before you quit. Just start out by becoming aware of what you’re doing. Look out for the signs of your habit or ritual. Take a mental note every time you notice something.
