Fearing That You Will Make a Mistake Is One of the Greatest Mistakes

by | Stop Drinking Alcohol | 1 comment

Today I just wanted to talk about making mistakes and the fear of making mistakes and how that can affect you.

From a personal level, I have prevented myself from doing things for years, because of fearing what will happen if I fail. I worry about what people will say about me and what l will look like. You can lose years out of your life by thinking that way and not doing things for fear of failing, over and over again, is in itself one of the biggest mistakes you can make.

It’s daunting stepping across that line and getting out of your comfort zone, moving away from what you know and what you’re comfortable with and going into something that you’re not comfortable with, knowing you may experience pain and the discomfort it causes. Some people call that discomfort panic, but I think it’s a different thing.

I think we can get to a stage in our life where even the smallest discomforts and pushes outside of your comfort zone can cause you to have a certain amount panic, because of how you’re viewing it in your head. You can have a panic attack.

Something you need to remember and understand is that anybody and everybody in this life, makes mistakes. I don’t care if it’s the smartest man on the planet or the most successful Business Man, Actor, or Actress, it doesn’t make any difference, people make mistakes every day. What does mark out these people that succeed, however, is how that mistake affects them.

For many years of my life I drank alcohol. I would make a mistake and then I’d start hammering on myself and I wouldn’t let up on it, I would ask myself, why did you do that, why didn’t you do something else and it would stop me from doing it again, stop me from repeating the process. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, and try again.

I’d always try to tell myself that I’d always try and big myself up, and say it’s only a mistake and keep going forwards but there was always that element of fear in the background that stopped me from doing it and the more – I wouldn’t say the more mistakes you make – but the more fear you have in your mind and, the more pessimistic and negative you are about your own mistakes, the more it’s going to feed your desire not to do it anymore and to stay inside your comfort zone.

Plenty of people use all sorts of drugs, including alcohol in order to stay inside their comfort zone, even when they know the drug – the alcohol, the cigarettes, the cocaine, whatever it is – is gradually, and slowly taking their life away.

It’s like anything in life, where you focus your mind is where the energy goes. Do you remember the first time you rode a bike, when eventually you were able to ride without anyone holding on to the bike or without the stabilisers, and you were able to just do it unconsciously and then all of a sudden you start to think about it and that’s when you’d make a mistake? When you started to focus on the process. I find the same thing happens when I’m typing. I can type 70 or 80 wpm, which is not that great, but good enough. I can be typing away and as soon as I start concentrating on the typing or the mistakes that I can see on the screen, I start to make more mistakes and screw up the whole thing.

As soon as you start concentrating on the errors and on the mistakes, that’s when more mistakes happen, so you have to focus on the journey, not on the end result, but on the day by day journey that is getting you where you want to be. So, if you make a mistake, say ‘I’ve made a mistake today’ and that’s it.
